State renewal guide

How to Renew Your California Liquor License (ABC) in 2026

California liquor licenses are issued by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and must be renewed every year. For a bar or restaurant, a lapsed license can halt alcohol sales — often the heart of the business — so this is one you can't afford to miss.

When it's due

Annually, on your license's anniversary. ABC typically mails a renewal notice 45–60 days before expiration. If you miss it, you can generally keep operating for about 60 days by paying the renewal fee plus a 50% penalty — expensive, and avoidable.

How to renew

Renew online through ABC Online Services and pay the renewal fee before your expiration date. Keep your business and ownership information current so the renewal isn't held up.

What trips people up

Because it's annual, it comes around fast — and it sits next to your county food facility permit (also annual) and other licenses on different dates. One calendar for all of them is the only reliable fix.
